When the eye is unable to produce a healthy film or coating of tears, the condition is known as dry eye

  • Blurred vision
  • Itching and burning
  • Redness in the eye
  • Light sensitivity
  • Sctratchy sensation in the eye

Dry eye commonly occurs with age. Hormonal changes that alter the production of tears for your eyes. Other causes of dry eye are a dry environment, sun exposure, smoking, heat or chemical burns, and/or a previous eye surgery.

The primary treatment for dry eye is to use artifical tears. Your Optometrist will determine if you need prescription or non-prescrition eye drops. Other treatments may include consuming fish oil, contact lenses that retain moisture, medicines such as Restasis, or tiny plugs inserted in the tear ducts to retain moisture.
